Working Effectively in Small Teams (WEST)

Acquiring new skills requires practice over an extended period of time. WEST is a fully immersive learning experience designed to give participants numerous opportunities to practice skills for working with others by actually working with others using a game platform.

WEST has been a cornerstone of our company for over a decade, due to its effectiveness in aiding participants to acquire skills that enable them to work more effectively in teams.

“The things I learned I have incorporated into all aspects of my [life], and it has improved my relationships not only with my staff, peers and superiors, but also my family, and perhaps most importantly with myself. All this was challenging, but the safe and supportive environment provided by the WEST team also made it thoroughly enjoyable.”

FAQs

  • Similar to W2O, the WEST program is a remote, individual and team learning experience designed to support people to actively develop the Working with Others in Pluralistic Networks of Care skill set.

What makes WEST unique is the incorporation of virtual learning labs where teams practice these skills together.

  • The WEST program consists of the following components:

    1. Learning Modules. WEST is composed of twelve modules, each carefully crafted with relevant readings, videos and exercises that build on each other to support the acquisition of new skills and sensibilities.

    2. Exercises. Similar to W2O, participants also have access to our exclusive Plural Gyms. These gyms feature exercises for honing coordination skills and sensibilities, as well as exercises that support participants to navigate restrictive moods that commonly emerge in teams – like resignation, distrust and overwhelm – and to cultivate more expansive moods – like confidence, resolution and trust.

    3. Virtual Learning Labs. In addition, WEST participants engage in virtual learning labs with an assigned team. The WEST program leverages a massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) to conduct virtual exercises in which teams practice and acquire new skills together. Participants are assigned to small teams and given one virtual exercise per week to complete as a team over the course of three and a half months. A member of the Plural team joins participants as they complete these exercises and participates in the debriefs.

    4. Group and individual sessions with a Plural coach. Once a month, a senior member of the Plural team conducts a group session to check in with all participants and to practice additional conversational exercises together. In addition, during the program, participants meet with a Plural coach for three individual conversations (or more if a participant asks to meet.)
